DeLorean Showcase 2019
There were many proud parents, teachers, community mentors and students in attendance at the Beerwah Community Hall on Wednesday 20th for the annual DeLorean Project Showcase. This year the bar was raised to include an expo, dinner and formal presentation with guest speakers and student reflections.
A visit from our local DeLorean car owner allowed guests the opportunity to snap a pic in the iconic time machine car and that off their bucket list, while others were able to sample the barista-quality coffee from the student team Bean There Coffee. The feedback from guests at the showcase echoed similar sentiments regarding how impressed they were by the ideas and the confidence of our Year 10 DeLorean students. Many students incorporated a social justice cause and this further supports the fact that our youth care about their community and want to help, they just don’t necessarily know how or have an avenue for which to do this.
Besides the beautifully presented grazing table (that was in itself a show stopper), our special guest for the evening won over the hearts and minds of our students. Leanne Kemp, Queensland’s Chief Entrepreneur, spoke from her own experience and her heart about following her passion for a career, rather than the safe and traditional accounting option that her father encouraged. Leanne and The Office of the Chief Entrepreneur were suitably impressed by the students’ projects and are keen to be involved in The DeLorean Project in 2020 and beyond. This opens up a significant network of support and authentic and relevant learning opportunities for the future cohorts coming through the program.
A massive thank you to all the students for bringing their A-game to Showcase 2019. They have much to be proud of and each of their individual journeys and the skills they have developed throughout the year will benefit their futures. Thank you to the parents who supported the program and your youth. Students don’t know what they don’t know, but they trust their parents and their teachers with their futures - support of the DeLorean Project is adding a significant bonus factor to your child’s all-round education and their ability to be successful in the future. Thank you to all the people involved in our network from across the Sunshine Coast for their support and mentoring of our students throughout the year. With their help, we have been able to break down the walls of the classroom and provide so many authentic and relevant learning opportunities for these students.
If you haven’t already followed @thedeloreanproj on social media, I recommend you do, so you can keep up to date with what’s happening and see first hand the learning experiences and opportunities that are available to students of GCC in the DeLorean program.
